Dr. Diganta Das, Associate Research Scientist at CALCE hosted Guangyu Chen, Ph.D., School of Management and Economics, and Yong Tang, Ph.D., School of Computer Science and Engineering at CALCE this week. Both are professors at the University of Electronic Science and Technology in Chengdu, China. Xianhua Chen, graduate student of the University of Alberta, Canada, accompanied the two professors.

During their visit, Prof. Chen provided his presentation, ‘Availability Evaluation and System Optimization,’ (abstract below) to students and research staff, and Yong Tang presented a brief presentation on their university and his work in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Following their presentations and an introduction to CALCE members, the guests had individual meetings with the Battery and Prognostics and Health Management working groups and other research staff. They discussed future collaborations including student visits and faculty talks.

The day concluded with a tour of CALCE lab facilities and University of Maryland Campus.

CALCE hopes to foster relationships with universities throughout the world and welcomes the opportunity for collaboration.

Abstract of Talk of Prof. Chen: The multi-state weighted k-out-of-n system model can illustrate the relationships of performance and reliability or availability between the components and the system. In recent years, the growing attention of experts and scholars is attracted.

Under the condition that the state probabilities of components are dynamically changing with time, a generalized availability model for k-out-of-n systems is presented. Quantity threshold and randomness of the weight threshold are both considered, and a new method of combining stochastic joint operator with general generation function is proposed, in order to solve the problem that the quantity and the weight of components in the systems cannot be mapped to each other. The availability evaluation model of the systems is also applicable to the situation where the weight threshold is subject to continuous random distribution. Then, two system optimization models under system availability constraint or system cost constraint are constructed respectively, and an efficient Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to compute optimal reliability and performance design values for components. An example analysis is shown to demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed model and the effect of the quantity threshold on system mission-availability, which can provide clear policy recommendations for designer of multi-state weighted k-out-of-n system.
