Michael Pecht Ranked Among World’s Top Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Scientists for 2026

Research.com has ranked Professor Michael Pecht, Founding Director of CALCE, among the top scientists in its 2026 Best Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Scientists Ranking. Professor Pecht was ranked No. 40 in the world and No. 21 in the United States.
Dr. Pecht’s recognition reflects his long-standing contributions to reliability engineering, prognostics and health management, electronics reliability, battery safety, and risk assessment. His work through CALCE has helped advance research, standards, and industry practices in the reliability and safety of electronic systems. Together, this recognition highlights the continued impact of CALCE research and Dr. Pecht’s leadership in electronics reliability and advanced system safety.
Professor Pecht is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, the Founding Director of CALCE, a Chair Professor in Mechanical Engineering, and a Professor in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Computation. He is a Professional Engineer and a Fellow of IEEE, the PHM Society (Life Fellow), ASME, ASM, SAE, and IMAPS. He has authored more than 30 books and 1,000 articles on reliability and related topics. He has over 75,000 citations and a H-index of 120.
Over his career, Professor Pecht has received numerous recognitions, including the IEEE Reliability Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the IEEE Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Award, for his pioneering work in physics-of-failure and prognostics-based approaches to electronics reliability. He has also contributed his expertise to three U.S. National Academy of Science studies, two U.S. Congressional investigations into automotive safety, and has served as an expert to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
