Trends in Counterfeit Electronics - A Data-Driven Analysis

Fred Schipp

Naval Surface Warfare Center

Abstract: As counterfeit electronic parts continue to be sold through the gray market, certain trends can be identified from reviewing thousands of suspect part reports. This presentation digs into data from the past ten years to try to determine if certain part manufacturers or part types have become more likely targets for counterfeiting. Historically there have been additional driving factors, such as temperature range, obsolescence status, and especially country of origin (of the supplier) that can be quantified through data analysis and summarized.

Bio: Fred Schipp is an electrical engineer and counterfeit electronic parts subject matter expert at NSWC Crane, and supports counterfeit policy development for NAVSEA 05R. He has also audited many defense contractors and part suppliers for counterfeit mitigation processes, and is currently supporting counterfeit policy implementation and awareness training for NAVSEA. Fred frequently analyzes counterfeit part data, searching for trends that can be shared with concerned organizations.
