Abstract: Swelling in lithium-ion batteries poses significant reliability and safety concerns, potentially leading to product damage, fires, or explosions. This webinar explores the causes of swelling and their implications for battery performance. The effects of C-rate and temperature on swelling during cycling tests, as well as the influence of upper voltage limits and temperature under constant voltage/ floating voltage charging conditions, are investigated.  The swelling behavior during thermal runaway is analyzed to develop an approach for detecting its onset before gas venting occurs. This early detection enables timely interventions to either prevent thermal runaway or activate mitigation measures to reduce the impact of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries.

About the Presenter: Sahithi Maddipatla is pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, under the direction of Prof. Michael Pecht while working as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE). She earned her B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, India, in 2020. Her research interests include failure analysis, testing, prognostics, and health monitoring of lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on swelling mechanisms in pouch-type lithium-ion cells. Her current work on early detection of thermal runaway is supported by a Discoveries in Safety Grant from Underwriters Laboratories. To date, she has published four papers on topics including failure analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), swelling, and core collapse in batteries.
