Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and other recent events have created a period of unprecedented supply chain turmoil. As a result, we see shortages of raw materials and components, logistics disruptions, cyberattacks, and other threats. These problems join counterfeit electronic parts that have been a concern over the last decades already. Counterfeit can pose a number of reliability risks, including:

• Failure of the part: Counterfeit parts are often made with inferior materials and workmanship, which can lead to premature failure. This can cause equipment to malfunction, which can lead to safety hazards, financial losses, and productivity disruptions.
• Performance degradation: Even if a counterfeit part does not fail outright, it may not perform as well as an authentic part. This can lead to reduced performance, which can impact the quality of the product or service.
• Incompatibility with other part: Counterfeit parts may not be compatible with other parts in the system. This can lead to system failures or malfunctions.
• Safety hazards: In some cases, counterfeit parts can pose safety hazards. For example, counterfeit capacitors have been known to fail and cause fires.

This presentation will focus on the safeguards one must take to have faith in the reliability assessment and field performance of electronics. The Webinar will review the broad concerns regarding the supply chain and counterfeiting and then concentrate on some of the supply chain- related solutions.
