Intellectual Property Laws in the UK and their Enforcement Strategies

Abstract:
This keynote will include an insight into the IPO’s Counter Infringement Strategy and its work in developing partnerships and projects in the UK and internationally. It will also highlight the importance of industry partners engaging with the IPO’s Intelligence Gateway Team and how reporting of IP Crime can help the UK build a better understanding of the threats posed by counterfeit goods to both industry and consumers.
The keynote will also cover the need to change consumer behaviors using awareness campaigns, the UK’s policy on the exhaustion of rights, and the challenges and opportunities posed by e-commerce platforms.
Biography:
Miles Rees joined the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in 1988, having previously worked for a law firm in South Wales.
He began his career as a trademark examiner and eventually was Deputy Head of Examination when he left that directorate some years later. He has subsequently managed the IPO’s Business Outreach Team, developing marketing campaigns for small and medium-sized businesses throughout the UK.
Miles Rees moved to the Outreach Policy directorate in 2012 and has managed a variety of policy initiatives, including managing relationships with e-commerce platforms and the organization of IP enforcement at large sporting events such as the Euro’s 2022 football tournament.
Miles Rees is currently a Deputy Director with responsibility for all domestic and international enforcement policy activities.
During his career in the IPO, he has completed a Diploma in Law and Intellectual Property, co-authored a book entitled ‘Teach Yourself Intellectual Property’, and has undertaken many media activities, including live radio and TV interviews.
Miles Rees lives in South Wales with his wife, Bridget, who also works at the IPO.
