Hyunseok Oh is an Associate Professor in the School of the Mechanical Engineering, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Gwangju, Republic of Korea. His research area includes prognostics and health management (PHM) and industrial artificial intelligence (IAI). During his visit to UMD as a visiting scholar, collaborative research will be conducted in the area of PHM and IAI.

Prof. Oh received the B.S. degree from Korea University, Seoul, Republic of Korea, in 2004, the M.S. degree from KAIST, Daejeon, Republic of Korea, in 2006, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA, in 2012. He received several awards, including the A. James Clark Fellowship (2007), the IEEE PHM Data Challenge Competition Winner (2012), the PHM Society Data Challenge Competition Winner (2014, 2015), and the ACSMO Young Scientist Award (2016).

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) was established by the South Korean government in 1993 as a research-oriented school to train highly skilled scientists and researchers, to create a strong research base for further development of advanced science and technology, and to promote collaborative foreign and domestic research programs within industry and academia. In the 2016/2017, QS World University Rankings® Result tables, GIST was ranked number 2 in the world in the category of citations per faculty. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014-2015, GIST was ranked 96th in the world in the category of Engineering & Technology.
