Avoiding Counterfeits by Using Proactive Obsolescence Management

Ian Blackman [International Institute of Obsolescence Management]

Abstract:

The supply of counterfeit electronic components is driven by the drive to renew component catalogues by the semiconductor industry. A company that manages obsolescence proactively will have in place the tools and resources to understand and communicate with their supply chain. This should avoid unpleasant surprises from obsolescence and reduce the need to procure parts from unofficial sources such as brokers when a product discontinuance occurs. The Obsolescence Management standard IEC 62402:2019 developed drives best practice in obsolescence management and is supported by IIOM initiatives such as the qualification of practitioners and endorsed training providers.

This presentation will show how world-class companies manage their build standard, partner with suppliers, use tools to make smart selection decisions, and report regularly to their executive leadership and customers. Best practice obsolescence management is practiced widely in the following industry sectors: Automotive, Aviation, Defence, Industrial, Medical, Nuclear, Rail, and Space.
