The UL Battery Safety Symposium was held on June 15 and 16, 2022. In his talk titled "The Risks of Purchasing Batteries from Unreliable Sources", prepared together with graduate student Lingxi Kong and the center director, Prof. Michael Pecht, Dr. Das introduced the audience to the fragile supply chain of commercial batteries and how low-quality batteries can reach the customers exposing them to possible safety concerns. The low-quality batteries can come in many forms, including Defective/Out-of-spec batteries, Counterfeit batteries, Remarked/rewrap batteries, Batteries from a disassembled battery pack, and Recycled batteries,
He provided brief guidance on detecting problematic batteries based on labels and appearance. The entire battery supply chain should take responsibility for mitigating the potential hazards of risky lithium-ion batteries.
