Abstract:

This presentation aims to inform the attending industry members of the upcoming IDEA-STD-1010-C. It will offer a brief outline of the upcoming revision and provide an opportunity for feedback on what the industry members would like to see.

The IDEA-STD-1010-B Acceptability of Electronic Components Distributed in the OpenMarket is a one of a kind technical resource used by OEMs, EMS, Government entities, test labs, Independent Distributors, and others - basically, by anyone and everyone who is involved in the inspection of electronic components and valued by anyone who holds a stake in ensuring that the components coming on to their boards are not substandard. While the IDEA-STD-1010-B has such a large user base, it has been several years since its publication, and while the fundamental steps will remain, the counterfeiters’ processes and expertise have advanced, and the new version will reflect that. To address those concerns, the IDEA-STD-1010-C will have several new sections, including a section dedicated to Purchasing, which is the first line of defense against counterfeit components. The purchasing section will focus on how to screen open market suppliers, vendor rating systems, suggested terms and conditions of purchasing from the open market, warranty and returns, and continued supplier risk assessment with sample checklists and detailed explanations. An expanded Advanced Inspection section will provide more details on techniques that are briefly mentioned in the IDEA-STD-1010-B such as outlining the different methods of decapsulation and investigating the wide range of decap results as well as X-Ray and Acoustic Microscopy and will discuss techniques not covered in the IDEA-STD-1010B, such as FTIR, HCT, SEM, cross-sectioning, heated solvents, AOI and more. The working group is developing guidance on conducting a successful inspection without having a true golden sample with tips on barcodes and labels, decision matrices and more. It will also cover how the IDEA-STD-1010-C will be released on an online platform, emphasizing visual media, including step-by-step videos and images that can be magnified and rotated for clear guidance. There will be a separate portal that will be restricted to OEMs/EMS/Dept of Defense and strictly vetted Independent Distributors, this will be a live repository of images, videos, new technologies, equipment, links, tips, and tricks. This platform will create a powerful coalescence across the industry, emphasizing the sharing of knowledge to stay ahead of counterfeiters.
