Soma Roy

The Philadelphia Section of the STLE has awarded a scholarship to University of Maryland Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. student Soma Roy, working under the direction and mentorship of Michael H. Azarian, PhD. Soma came to UMD after earning her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Soma’s research explores the lubrication of polymer-metal contact pairs to enhance the performance and reliability of electronic components. Over the past year, She has investigated polymer/gold contacts under fretting load conditions, aiming to assess tribological performance, analyze failure mechanisms, and create a structural FEA model to simulate friction and wear. Her work thus far has led to a first-author conference publication to be presented in October 2024 at the 32nd ICEC and the 69th IEEE Holm Conference on Electrical Contacts.

In the past, this scholarship has been awarded to past CALCE students- Rishabh Chaudhary (2020) and Lovlesh Kaushik (2018) for their contributions to the field of tribology. CALCE extends its gratitude to the STLE Philadelphia Chapter for their continued recognition and support of our students' achievements.

For more information or queries on this award or the research area, contact Soma Roy and Dr. Michael Azarian.
