Bill Cardoso Addresses the Question "Can AI Help Us in the Fight Against Counterfeit Components?" at the Symposium on Counterfeit Parts and Materials

Bio: Now a CEO of Creative Electron, Inc., Dr. Bill Cardoso has a BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He started Creative Electron in his garage in 2008. Creative Electron is 10 years old now, and after the acquisition of FocalSpot in 2016, it became the largest US manufacturer of x-ray systems to the electronics industry. Bill is also a recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and sits on the technical committees of SMTA International, SMTA Counterfeit Conference, and SMTA LED Conference, Components for Military and Space Electronics Conference, SPIE Photonics, and the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium. He is a senior IEEE member. Bill is on the board of the SMTA, MiraCosta College, and Illinois Institute of Technology. Bill has written two books and over 150 technical publications.

Abstract: Gartner’s Technology Hype Cycle puts many application of artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in around the ‘peak of inflated expectations’ or headed into the ‘trough of disillusionment.’ Meanwhile, very few have made it onto the ‘slope of enlightenment’ let alone the ‘plateau of productivity.’

One reason that AI is in this trough of disillusionment is the height of its high peak of inflated expectations. Science fiction has painted a picture of AI systems that are more powerful than human intelligence and capable of running complex ecosystems and even entire societies. The truth about AI is quite different. This truth is a reason to embrace rather than fear AI.

AI is at its best is when it is applied to tasks that exhibit certain traits. These are typically narrow in their application, but substantial in terms of the data utilized, particularly in the learning process.
