Marie Williams Discusses "Utilization of Blockchain in CBP through Proof of Concept tests" at the Symposium on Counterfeit Parts and Materials

Bio: Marie Williams is a Branch Chief for the Business Transformation and Innovation Division, under the Office of Trade. As a Customs and Border Protection professional, she supervises staff who routinely assesses and analyzes new technology within the parameters of CBP’s business operational needs. Providing futuristic vision on products and software Ms. William’s branch is responsible for proactively pursuing change in a rapidly changing technical environment.  The branch actively oversees proof of concepts and test trials of new technologies utilizing fail fast methodology to reduce cost for government expenditures. 
 
Abstract: This presentation will discuss the government’s role in blockchain from a CBP perspective including our role in developing standards for Blockchain.  Additionally, it will discuss our first three Proof of Concepts. NAFTA/CAFTA (Free Trade Agreements) looked at streamlining data to conduct origin verifications. This POC was completed at the end of 2018.  IPR, (Intellectual Property Rights) will look at evaluating suspect goods registered with CBP, through identified licensor/licensee relationships. This POC is expected to conclude fall 2019. Pipeline will look at tracking oil shipments from well-head to importation to correctly process NAFTA/CAFTA claims.  This POC is expected to kick-off fall 2019.
