Abstract: The best advice for buying electronic parts is to buy directly from manufacturers and their authorized distributors, but that is sometimes impossible. This presentation will discuss the many ways that you can assess unauthorized distributors that you may have to consider, which is the best way that you can avoid receiving counterfeit parts from them. Some of these methods you may have heard piecemeal in other presentations or venues, others you likely haven't. Some are quick and free, others require memberships or subscriptions. This presentation summarizes many of your options, in detail:
- Website check and reviews
- Map check
- CAGE code check
- GIDEP check
- IDEA and ERAI
- Building your own organization’s own approved supplier list
- IHS sources
- Counterfeit-related certifications and references
- Site pre-assessment and visit
…and more. The caution is also offered that regardless which of these steps you implement, you should also require some degree of checking the parts after purchase, a few options of which will be very briefly mentioned.
Bio: Jerry Martinez is a part specialist and failure analysis expert at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in La Cañada Flintridge, California. He started in the space parts field in 1984, right out of UC Berkeley, in the failure analysis lab at Hughes Aircraft and has been working on space parts of every kind since then. Jerry became involved with the counterfeit issue at Boeing Satellite Systems, then served as the counterfeit focal at Trident Space & Defense, and now serves on JPL’s Counterfeit Parts Avoidance Working Group and is NASA’s primary trainer on counterfeit avoidance. He has presented at the International Symposium for Testing and Failure Analysis, and at this symposium served as a presenter, panelist, and session moderator.
