Why Counterfeit Avoidance Needs a Cultural Change in Human Behaviour and Not Just Technical Solutions!

Roger Rogowski [Anticounterfeiting Forum]

Abstract:

As humans we have a family persona and a work persona. In many ways we are the same person underneath.

However, sometimes we behave in a way that clearly is a contradiction to our engineering and legal understanding.

In a work environment we act responsibly, we assess risks and engage with sellers in a measured and contractual sound basis.

In our private lives we react at speed, take risks, and happily discard the ethical business rules of intellectual property and fair value for a quick convenience purchase.

The online marketplace and underground economies are seen as competitive sources to real shops, and we choose to ignore the proven problems from arm’s length trading.

We do try to prevent counterfeits in our delivered products, but we seem to take risks in operational materials and infrastructure purchase where we cannot resist the bargain no matter the risk.

This presentation will challenge attendees to review the decisions made in their business purchases and the consequences for the world as a whole.
