Wednesday, June 26, 2019
10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
DeWalt Seminar Room, 2164 Martin Hall

Visiting research scholar, Dr. Ijaz Haider Naqvi, Lahore University of Management Sciences, will present lecture for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at 10:00AM, Wednesday June 26th in the DeWalt Seminar Room (2164) of Martin Hall. Refreshments will be provided at 9:45AM.

Abstract

Deep learning is a subset of artificial intelligence and machine learning that provides great flexibility by learning features in a hierarchical manner. Deep learning has increasingly been used across diverse applications and Prognostics and System Health Management (PHM) is no exception. The huge amount of data acquired by engineering systems call for sophisticated algorithms for analysis and decision making. In particular, fault diagnosis, health degradation assessment, and remaining useful life prognostics are areas where deep learning has recently been applied more frequently. This lecture will cover the fundamentals of deep learning and present examples of applications of deep learning to prognostics and health management.

About Speaker

Ijaz Haider Naqvi is an Associate Professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan, in the department of Electrical Engineering. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE). He received his B.Sc. Electrical Engg. from University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (2003), Masters in Radio Communications degree from SUPELEC Paris (2006) and Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from IETR-INSA Rennes, France (2009). He has several years of research experience in the wireless communications and wireless sensor networks. His current research focuses on millimeter wave technologies for 5G wireless networks, system level aspects in wireless sensor networks, and network management issues in wireless mobile networks. He has published many refereed papers in international journals and peer reviewed international conferences. Dr. Naqvi has been a visiting research scholar at Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) since November 2018 where he has been working on prognostics tools development for many systems including batteries, power electronics, and data storage systems.
